Getting started
Instructions for accessing SafeICU data. Although de-identified, the datasets described herein contain detailed information about patients' clinical care and must be treated with appropriate care and respect.
Researchers seeking to use the database must:
- Become a credentialed user by completing the SafeICU credentialing application in the portal.
- Sign the Data Use Agreement (DUA). Adherence to the terms of the DUA is mandatory.

Upload a valid CITI program certification during the DUA submission process to support credential verification and responsible data access.

NOTE:- While registering in the CITI Program, users should select: "Massachusetts Institute of Technology Affiliates" as their affiliated organization.
SafeICU Credentialing
Before requesting access to SafeICU, you must become a credentialed user. When your application has been approved, you will receive an email notification. Approval may take several business days and will be delayed if your request is missing any required information.
Submissions that are clearly incomplete, incorrect, or frivolous may be discarded without notice. If you are a student or postdoc, you must provide your supervisor’s name and contact information in the reference section of the form. If you are not listed on an easily discoverable page of your organization’s website, please provide a reference such as a supervisor or colleague. Do not list yourself as a reference.
Signing the Data Use Agreement
- Open the SafeICU project page in the portal.
- Scroll to the Files section.
- Click the data use agreement link.
- Review the terms and sign electronically.
